
Welcome to the online forums for NNLM Book Discussion, November 3 - January 31, 2026. This discussion is moderated by Dana Abbey, NNLM Region 4 at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and Liz Morris, NNLM Region 5, at the University of Washington, Seattle.
NNLM Book Discussion offers library staff, health professionals, and public health workers interested in better understanding health issues faced by their communities an opportunity to explore topics with other professionals and earn Continuing Education Credit.
Participants have 3 months to complete the book in their preferred format and complete the class requirements to earn 4 MLA CE on their schedule.
Requirements to earn CE
- Complete the book in your preferred format
- Log into the Moodle
- Explore the shared resources
- Do ONE of the following
- Answer the required discussion question in Moodle OR
- Attend one of the two live discussion sessions and participate
It is not necessary to engage in Moodle discussions for all three months, although you are welcome to do so.

- 3 communication practices you can do to improve health literacy
- 3 resources that you can use to improve health literacy

This class covers the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public. Come learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient.
Participants will be equipped with knowledge of top consumer health sites, e-patient resources and collection development core lists. We will discuss creative ideas for health information outreach. The class will wrap up with an opportunity to explore effective marketing approaches and develop an elevator speech.
